On October 1, GER³ and partner District #1 launched a winterization project to help families in Sumy and Kherson oblasts get through the coming winter, while becoming better prepared for the next one.
In the first week alone, the team delivered firewood to more than 340 homes.
Communities near the front line are facing a fourth winter of compounding pressures. Ongoing attacks, damaged homes and infrastructure, frequent power cuts, rising prices and lost incomes are all making winter harder to manage. In rural areas, many families rely on solid fuels such as firewood for heating, while broken windows and doors and poorly insulated roofs make it difficult to keep homes warm.
The project will last six months and responds to needs that affected communities identified themselves during an extensive needs assessment. It provides two kinds of support:
- Chopped, palletized firewood delivered directly to more than 1,080 homes.
- Home insulation support for more than 330 families, helping them keep heat inside this winter and improve the warmth and efficiency of their homes over the longer term.
Support is focused on the most vulnerable households, with registration events held openly in each community and clear eligibility criteria in place. Throughout the project, recipients will also be able to share feedback with GER³ so the team can respond to concerns and improve delivery where needed.
Materials are sourced through competitive procurement to help ensure funds are used efficiently and support reaches as many families as possible.
The project is funded by the Ukraine Humanitarian Fund (UHF) and contributes to the priorities of the 2026 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan for Ukraine.
