GER³ has begun construction of a new bomb shelter at the Pryluky Education and Rehabilitation Center in Chernihivska oblast, providing a safer and more accessible place for children, teachers, and staff to shelter during air raids.
The new shelter will serve 59 children with disabilities, as well as their teachers and Center staff.
The Pryluky Education and Rehabilitation Center provides education and specialized support for children in grades 1–4 with physical and intellectual disabilities. Twenty-nine children live at the Center full time, either because they are orphaned or require continuous care and support.
For these children, repeated air raid alerts present particular challenges. To reduce the stress and disruption caused by having to move during the night, the 29 residential children have been sleeping in the Center’s basement.
However, the existing shelter conditions are inadequate. The basement is damp, lacks proper ventilation and bathrooms, and does not have an accessible emergency exit for people with disabilities.
GER³ began construction in October to transform the space into a safer, more dignified, and accessible shelter.
The improvements include:
- New ventilation
- Water supply, sewage systems, and bathrooms
- A heating system
- Anti-radiation doors
- Waterproofing
- Two exits, including one accessible for people with disabilities
Once completed, the shelter will provide children and staff with a safer place to remain during air raids while helping the Center continue providing essential education, care, and rehabilitation services.
