Overview
Hurricanes Eta and Iota brought severe rainfall and widespread flooding to Honduras in November 2020, striking communities already facing significant vulnerability and leaving homes, roads and essential infrastructure buried in mud and debris.
GER³ deployed its Global Response Team to Honduras shortly after the storms, carrying out assessments across some of the hardest-hit communities in Cortés Department. The response focused on removing debris, restoring access to homes and community facilities, and working with local teams to help families begin the recovery process. Operations continued into 2021, with targeted projects in La Canaán and El Progreso supporting vulnerable households and essential community services.
General focus areas
Debris clearance and restoring access
Flooding left streets, homes and community facilities covered in thick mud and storm debris, making many areas difficult or impossible to access.
GER³ worked with local teams to clear roads, drainage areas and damaged properties so communities could begin cleaning, repairing and returning home. In La Canaán, the team cleared every street in the community while also helping residents remove mud and debris from their homes.
Homes and vulnerable families
Many households lacked the resources or physical ability to clear the heavy mud left behind by the floods.
GER³ provided household cleaning and debris removal support in La Canaán, prioritizing families facing the greatest barriers to recovery. By helping make homes safe and accessible again, the project enabled residents to take some of the first practical steps toward returning and rebuilding.
Essential community facilities
GER³ also focused on facilities that provided critical services to surrounding communities.
At Proniño, a children’s home outside El Progreso, flooding had made the property inaccessible and left buildings filled with up to several feet of mud. GER³ restored access to the site and worked with a local team to remove mud and debris and clean the campus buildings.
In La Lima, GER³ cleared mud and debris from the Hospital Limeños de Corazon, including its parking areas, sidewalks, drainage channels and surrounding streets. Restoring access allowed recovery and reconstruction work to move forward at a health facility serving communities across the surrounding area.
